Construction Work Halted at Future Amazon Site Amidst Walkout
In a protest against Amazon contractor Building Zone Industries' hiring of non-union workers from out-of-state, approximately 75 construction workers walked off the job site of a future Amazon fulfillment center in Oxnard CA. This action effectively brought all operations on the tilt-up project to a full stop.
"We have 18,000 people out of work in our community, yet they bring in contractors from out of the area and take our tax base away," said Martin Rodriguez, an official at Ironworkers Local 433.
The strike in Oxnard was one of the first by construction workers at an Amazon facility in the United States.
The walk-out in California came days before Amazon workers in Alabama are scheduled to cast their votes on whether or not to unionize.
