NDOT Awarded 16.8M to Build Wildlife Crossings and Fencing Along U.S. Highway 93
The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has been awarded a $16.8 million grant from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to construct 61 wildlife crossings and install 68 miles of exclusionary fencing along U.S. Highway 93. This initiative aims to reduce vehicle-wildlife collisions significantly.
Funded through the Wildlife Crossings Pilot Program (WCPP), the grant will support the proposed Coyote Springs Wildlife Crossings Project, located on U.S. 93 near Coyote Springs in Clark and Lincoln Counties. The project reflects a collaborative effort between NDOT, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Bureau of Land Management.
Key objectives include improving driver safety, conserving the Mojave Desert tortoise, creating safe passageways for wildlife across fragmented habitats, and contributing to the recovery of the tortoise population.
NDOT will now proceed with a National Environmental Policy Act study and begin planning for construction, a process that typically spans several years.
The construction start date has yet to be determined.
