According to a recent press release, construction company PCL has been awarded the contract to design and implement significant upgrades to Amtrak's King Street Yard in Seattle. The $300 million project, made possible by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, aims to modernize maintenance operations in preparation for the arrival of the new Amtrak Airo trains, which are scheduled to enter service in 2026.

Planned improvements include the construction of a new two-bay facility for maintenance and inspections, along with a new service and cleaning bay. These upgrades will enhance the yard's capacity to service Amtrak Cascades trains, long-distance routes, and Sound Transit’s Sounder commuter trains. Additional work will involve relocating current facilities, upgrading utilities, and expanding storage space for train maintenance materials.

Throughout the duration of the project, Amtrak plans to maintain its regular services. PCL will carry out the work within the rail yard’s existing space, located south of Seattle’s Stadium District.

The facility will be heated without relying on fossil fuels, enabling Amtrak to leverage the region’s renewable electricity. This effort aligns with Amtrak’s goal of sourcing 100% carbon-free electricity by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2045.

This marks the second major rail upgrade contract awarded by Amtrak in 2024, following the project at Philadelphia's Penn Coach Yard. Similar upgrades are planned for Boston, New York City, and Washington, D.C., with contracts expected to be announced soon. PCL aims to complete the project by 2027.
