State Bill Could Mandate Warehouses Over 100K SF to be 1000 Ft from Residences
AB-2840, a recently passed California state bill, could require that new warehouses over 100,000 square feet be at least 1000 feet from any residences or "sensitive uses." The bill also could require that workers involved in warehouse construction be from a skilled and trained workforce as defined by the state Public Contract Code.
The bill would affect areas that constitute the Inland Empire namely San Bernardino and Riverside Counties and was authored by Assembly member Eloise Gomez Reyes whose district is within San Bernardino County
"Warehouses are being built right next to homes and schools. I believe it is time to establish reasonable standards to protect communities while at the same time allowing commerce to flourish,” Reyes said on the assembly floor.
The proliferation of large warehouses in the area has been a point of contention for some time. Many commercial real estate interests have pushed back against past warehouse regulations and are opposing this proposed law.
