Utility Work in Progress for the East San Fernando Valley Light Rail Project.

Early signs of construction for a light rail line in the median of Van Nuys Boulevard are beginning to emerge.
Metro recently announced that advanced utility work is underway for the East San Fernando Valley light rail line along Van Nuys Boulevard, between Nordhoff Street and Woodman Avenue. K-rail barriers will be set up along this stretch through the fall, maintaining two open lanes of traffic in each direction.
The initial phase of the East San Fernando Valley line, which secured nearly $900 million in federal funding in September 2024, will span 6.7 miles of right-of-way within the median of Van Nuys Boulevard. The line will connect the G Line’s Van Nuys Station to the Metrolink right-of-way in Pacoima, featuring 11 stations and links to the G Line Busway, Metrolink’s Ventura County Line, and Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner.
A second phase aims to extend service an additional 2.5 miles to the Sylmar/San Fernando Metrolink Station. Metro is also exploring the possibility of building a new station at Van Nuys Boulevard and San Fernando Road to connect with Metrolink’s Antelope Valley Line, as an alternative to extending light rail service.
Construction on Van Nuys Boulevard will overlap with a three-year closure of the G Line’s Van Nuys Station, which began on February 21. The closure supports a $668-million project designed to reduce travel times on the east-west busway.
Completion of the $3.6-billion light rail project is anticipated by 2031.
