Work on Metro G Line Upgrades to Commence in October '24
A new Metro staff report indicates that the plan to upgrade the G Line busway in the San Fernando Valley, including grade separations and crossing gates, is set to enter the construction phase in October.
This project, initially approved under the 2016 Measure M sales tax initiative, aims to enhance travel speed and reliability along the 18-mile bus route. When first introduced, Metro proposed building up to 35 gated crossings at street-level intersections and creating grade-separated crossings and stations at Van Nuys and Sepulveda Boulevards.
However, due to escalating construction costs, Metro has scaled back the plan to include gated crossings at only 13 intersections, while the remaining 22 will feature improved signaling. The grade-separated crossings at Van Nuys and Sepulveda Boulevards remain part of the plan, but will be built as smaller overcrossings instead of the originally planned single viaduct. Additionally, proposed upgrades to the nearby bikeway have been reduced, with plans for lighting, bicycle parking, signage, and bollards removed from the scope.
Construction is expected to be completed between 2027 and 2028, ahead of the Olympic Games. These improvements are projected to reduce bus travel time by about 12 minutes, down from the current 50-minute trip between Chatsworth and North Hollywood.
Once approved by the board, the project will have a budget of approximately $668 million, funded by a mix of state grants and local sales tax revenues.
